Mortgaging the Future

By Michael P. Baier

To the Editor:

In response the the 01-06-06 Northwest Herald front-page story, "President pushes for fixed tax cuts."

A more accurate headline would have read: "Bush pushes for future tax increases." The only way to appropriately cut taxes is to cut an equal amount of spending, too.

Our federal government, with so-called small-government Republicans in power, still misses the point of what a small government is supposed to mean. They can cut taxes all they want for the immediate future, but those long-term deficits still are out there.

Democrats would do no better for the small-government cause but they'll come out and tell us they will spend big. At least they are honest about it.

There still are those of us out there that genuinely want small government with little spending.

I have a question for the ardent Republican and Democrat supporters: How will you explain to your children that they will be paying for today's big government spending?
